Root, real name Janos Ruthaly, was born in today’s Chechia. He won the inaugural World Light Heavyweight title on 22/4/1903 defeating Charles ‘Kid’ McCoy on points over 10 rounds.
Root lost the title to George Gardener, TKO 12, just ten weeks later. Following the retirement of James J. Jeffries, Root was matched with Marvin Hart for the vacant World’s Heavyweight Championship on 3/7/1905; the fight refereed by Jeffries. Hart was proclaimed the new champion, winning by KO in the 12th. Jack Root fought just once more, retiring in 1906 with a record of 56 fights, W48 – L3 – D3 – ND2.

Creedon was all over Scanlan and dropped him for a count. Upon rising, both fighters clinched, then – according to the referee – Creedon punched on the break. The referee thereby awarded the fight to Scanlan. A month to the day later (on 14/1/1901) Jim Scanlan was awarded a draw after 7 rounds of a scheduled 20 round bout against Jack Johnson. According to the Galveston Daily News the referee cited both fighters’ failure to break clean after repeated warnings as the reason for his decision.
