PRINCIPLE AIMS OF THE NZBHOF
The NZBHOF has three principal aims. The first of these is to recognize the achievements of our greatest boxers. Those who achieved at the highest level. A non-combatants category also recognizes exceptional contributions made by some outside the ring. There is also a category for those visitors to our shores who during their stay here left an indelible mark on this country’s boxing history.
Secondly, we aim to promote the development of boxing in New Zealand by creating a platform that will showcase the achievements of our greatest performers to a wider audience. Bringing these former champions exploits back to life will also hopefully provoke debate as to the relevant merits of those who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame and those who have missed out this year but could be considered in future years.
Over the past 30 years, many have expressed dismay at what they feel is the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame’s scant recognition of New Zealand boxing. Boxings three NZSHOF inductees, when compared to the numerous World, Empire and Commonwealth professional titles won by NZ boxers, in addition to numerous Olympic, World Amateur, and Commonwealth Games medals clearly illustrates that boxing doesn’t register more than a minor blip on the radar of the NZSHOF. Compared to the number of track and field athletes who have attained Empire/Commonwealth Games gold medals and have subsequently been inducted into the NZSHOF, not a single boxer, six in total, have had their achievement recognized in the same way. This lack of recognition also applies to our professional boxers who have won Empire/Commonwealth titles, the sole exception being Barry Brown. Just one of our three Olympic boxing medallists have been inducted into the NZSHOF. The NZBHOF aims to redress this unfairness by showcasing the accomplishments of our greatest fighters and in doing so reach out to a wider public.
We hope you enjoy the experience as you wander through the NZBHOF.
